Gemstone Valuation

Valuing a gemstone is an opinion. Appraisers look at recent sales of similar weight, origin, colour and treatment, then adjust. Two competent appraisers can differ.

Inputs that actually move the number

  • Species and variety.
  • Weight and cut quality.
  • Colour and clarity in hand, not only on paper.
  • Treatment.
  • Origin when a laboratory has offered it.
  • Whether anyone is buying that category this year.

A token market, if one exists later, can trade away from the appraisal because of fees, lock-ups and thin order books. Read how gemstones are verified and valued and risk disclosure.
